Deuteronomy: 34 Truths to Lay Hold of Our Purpose
Deuteronomy 1
Sermon Description
In this week’s message, Pastor Jeff launches our new series, 34 Truths to Lay Hold of Our Purpose, with Deuteronomy 1 and the reminder that God’s purpose always begins with His promise. Israel struggled to trust God’s word when the obstacles before them seemed too great, and their unbelief delayed God’s plan. But Caleb modeled a different spirit—one that believed God’s promise more than the problems. Throughout the message, you’ll hear biblical and practical encouragement to fix your eyes on God’s promises, surround yourself with people of faith, and trust Him as a loving Father who carries His children even in the wilderness. Through this message, we hope that you would be strengthened to believe God’s report over every other voice and lay hold of the purpose He has set before you.
Series Overview
Moses had led the Israelites out of Egypt and into the wilderness. For 40 years they had wandered in the desert, never entering the land God had promised them, because of their lack of faith. But it was a new day, and a new generation of Israelites were ready to seize the destiny God had promised. Moses wouldn’t enter the promised land because he had cursed the people in anger. Joshua would lead them in.
Moses was speaking to a new generation who were about to step into their God given destiny. Many of them were unborn when the law had been given to Moses. There would be many battles. There were giants in the land they would need to defeat. But as they stood on the eastern border of the land God had promised them, Moses gave the people one last reminder of what they needed to know to enter the land and seize their destiny.
Deuteronomy means “Second Law.” For the second time Moses tells the people the words God had spoken. If they were to seize their destiny they would need to put these words into action. Moses, the great coach, is giving his final pre-game speech before the Israelites take the field. As we stand on the edge of our spiritual promised land, God is reminding us of the same 34 truths necessary to win our spiritual battles and seize our destiny in Christ.
